Do you support requiring police departments that receive federal funding to make officer misconduct and disciplinary records available in a public, searchable database?
Until 2025, the federal government maintained a database called the National Decertification Index that tracked law enforcement officers who had been decertified for misconduct, making it harder for fired officers to move to another department and repeat the same behavior. That database was shut down in January 2025. Several states maintain their own officer misconduct records, but there is no consistent federal standard for what gets reported, how long records are kept, or whether the public can access them. Bills to create a national searchable database have been introduced in multiple Congresses with bipartisan support but have not passed.
